Rite of Passage

Chastity N. Kennedy:

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22: 6

I am so proud of this dynamic young brotha and future freedom fighter, Jalen Kennedy, for winning 1st Place in the Morehouse Magnet School Social Studies Competition – Sociology Category in Bastrop, Louisiana and qualifying to compete in the Northeast Louisiana Regional Social Studies Competition in February 2017.

For the past two (2) years ago, I have served as Jalen’s mentor, surrogate father and empowerment coach, and it has been an honor and a blessing to be connected to a Black child who possesses such a magnetic personality, caring heart, nurturing spirit, phenomenal talent, strong passion for education, love for his mother and sister, love for his extended family, love for his community and love for his Black people.

His desire to follow in my footsteps as a corporate grassroots revolutionary advocate for Black people, and cultra-social entrepreneur have humbled me beyond measure; for you see, I have no biological children, so Jalen has become my ‘sun’, my ‘future me’. He possesses a special confidence about learning, reading and verbal communication that is rarely seen in Black males at any age, for he is the embodiment of Malcolm X’s belief,

“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”

I am honored to present to ‘Unapologetically Black’, my ‘sun’, my ‘future me’, Jalen Kennedy – 1st Place Winner of the Morehouse Magnet School Social Studies Competition – Sociology Category:

“School To Prison Pipeline – Is This The New System Of Jim Crow”.

In the immortal words of Donnie Hathaway, “what a blessing to be young, gifted and Black.”
